Maybe they are being used in the recreated walnut shell recap snow tire, as a substitute for steel (and other hard objects) studded tires. My Dad ran them in the 50's in Alaska and I'm saving a set of casings to have done before this winter for the travel vehicle. I think VW, BMW cars and one other manufacturer used them in a special tool to remove carbon from the backs (stem side) of valves as the walnut husks would not harm the engine or catalytic converter if there was any that didn't get vacuumed out during the job. I think welders used them for much the same reasons in cleaning before and after welding. Max
